7artisans Photoelectric 55mm f/1.4 II Overview

55mm F1 4 Mk IIMark II featuresComparison with the MARK I version

Featuring improved optics and a more robust design, the black Nikon Z-mount 55mm f/1.4 Mark II Lens from 7artisans is a fast and compact portrait-length prime well-suited for portrait photography. It can be used in facial close-up, half-length portrait, and full-body portrait to obtain excellent background blur effect. Its bright f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in low lighting and also enables isolating subject matter using selective focus and shallow depth of field. The six elements, five groups optical design is enhanced with a multi-layer coating that helps to suppress flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color rendering in a variety of lighting conditions. Additionally, the smooth manual focus design of the lens permits working with subjects as close as 1.4′ away and its 9-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Portrait-length prime is designed for APS-C-format Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras and offers an 82.5mm equivalent focal length. Bright f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working with shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques and also suits photographing in low-light conditions. Multi-layer coating has been applied to individual elements and reduces flare and ghosting in order to produce greater contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions. Manual focus design permits working with subjects as close as 1.4′. Depth of field and distance scales aid pre-focusing and zone focusing techniques. 9-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

    Very good optics!

I had not so good luck with two other 7artisans lenses but this one is great! The Fuji mount fits very tightly, but this is not a show stopper. The optics are very good and central sharpness wide open is excellent. Corner to corner, it sharpens up extremely well by F5.6. I shoot mostly landscape and in low light wide open it is surprisingly sharp across the frame. It has a large rear element and I’ve not noticed much vignetting. Focus and aperture rings move smoothly. No detents for aperture and I would prefer detents, but again this is not a show stopper. I haven’t seen much Flare, if any. Bokeh near and far is very nice, no onion rings seen. This is a low cost fully manual (no electronics) lens, so I don’t expect it to be equal to Zeiss Otus lenses, but I have been thrilled with its high performance, definitely punching above its weight optically.

    Surprised by the image quality

If you are a Fuji user this lens is a refreshing surprise. Excellent image quality as well as build quality. Highly recommended fast prime for the XT-3

I was expecting hot garbage I got a GEM for cheap!

By Jason Rated 4 out of 5 Date: 2021-11-03

First off build quality is VERY good for cheap glass. The control are rings buttery, both smooth focus and iris. YES its manual focus, big deal its still easy to focus on modern cameras anyway. PLus its solid METAL so its a bit heavy but feels so good im FLOORED that this is a budget lens- I have to say to me it has a very vintage look but that is fine… its clear that when handling it that essentially acts like an old slr m42 or FD lens etc… its great. On MFT makes a lovely portrait lens.
